Η περίληψη της έκδοσης έχει ως εξής: «Καθώς ο Χίτλερ επιχειρούσε να κατακτήσει το δυτικό κόσμο, οι στρατιές του λεηλατούσαν μεθοδικά τα κορυφαία έργα τέχνης στην Ευρώπη, από αριστουργήματα του Μιχαήλ Άγγελου και του Ντα Βίντσι μέχρι έργα του Βαν Άικ και του Βερμέερ, τα οποία κλάπηκαν για λογαριασμό του Φίρερ.
Τα μέλη της ομάδας Μνημείων Άνδρες είχαν εντολές από τον πρόεδρο Ρούσβελτ και την υποστήριξη του στρατηγού Αϊζενχάουερ, όμως δε διέθεταν οχήματα, καύσιμα, γραφομηχανές ή εξουσία.
Επιδόθηκαν με σθένος σε έναν αγώνα δρόμου με αντίπαλο το χρόνο, με στόχο τη διάσωση των μεγαλύτερων πολιτιστικών θησαυρών του κόσμου από την καταστροφή στα χέρια φανατικών Ναζί.
Αυτοί οι απρόσμενοι ήρωες άφησαν πίσω τους επιτυχημένες σταδιοδρομίες και κατευθύνθηκαν στο επίκεντρο του πολέμου, διακινδυνεύοντας ―και σε ορισμένες περιπτώσεις χάνοντας― τις ζωές τους. Αυτή είναι η ιστορία τους.
Η εντρύφηση του Ρόμπερτ Μ. Έντσελ στην ιστορία της ομάδας Μνημείων Άνδρες ξεκίνησε την εποχή που ζούσε στη Φλωρεντία, στα τέλη της δεκαετίας του 1990.
