Σκοπός του βραβείου είναι να τονώσει το ενδιαφέρον για τη λογοτεχνία για τα παιδιά και τους νέους, και να προωθήσει το δικαίωμα των παιδιών στον πολιτισμό παγκοσμίως.
Ο Κύκλος του Ελληνικού Παιδικού Βιβλίου ανακοίνωσε επίσης τον έλληνα συγγραφέα που θα είναι υποψήφιος εκ μέρους της χώρας μας για το σουηδικό βραβείο παιδικής λογοτεχνίας Άστριντ Λίντγκρεν.
Η Άλκη Ζέη, παρούσα στη χτεσινή βραδιά, πληροφορήθηκε την υποψηφιότητά της για το σπουδαίο αυτό βραβείο Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award (ALMA), το οποίο απονέμεται ετησίως από το 2002 για να τιμήσει τη δημιουργό της πολυαγαπημένης Πίπης Φακιδομύτης, και συνοδεύεται από χρηματικό έπαθλο ύψους πέντε εκατομμυρίων κορονών – το υψηλότερο έπαθλο που δίνεται διεθνώς για βραβείο παιδικών βιβλίων. Το βραβείο απονέμεται σε συγγραφείς, εικονογράφους, αφηγητές ή και σε άτομα που προωθούν την ανάγνωση και των οποίων το έργο αντανακλά το πνεύμα της Άστριντ Λίντγκρεν.

Κάποιοι από τους συγγραφείς που έχουν ήδη τιμηθεί με το βραβείο είναι ο Φίλιπ Πούλμαν, η Κάθριν Πάτερσον, ο Χις Κέγερ.
